Gilham was Instructor of Tactics, and Commandant of Cadets of the Virginia Military Institute, and published his manual in It was intended to expand on the existing manuals used by the regular army, and provide more explanation and clarification for the Volunteers and Militia, which the Regular Army took for granted.
